How to Care for Your Contact Lenses: A Guide

Contact lenses are a popular eyeglasses alternative for vision correction. They are worn directly on the eye and provide a more realistic and open field of vision. However, contact lenses require proper care to ensure safe and comfortable wear.

Cleaning

One of the most crucial steps in caring for your contact lenses is keeping them clean. To clean your contacts, remove them from your eyes and rinse them thoroughly with a contact lens solution. Never use tap water to clean your lenses, as it can contain microorganisms that can cause serious eye infections.

Next, use your index finger and thumb to rub the lenses gently. Doing so for around 20 seconds will clean any dirt or debris that may have collected on the lenses. Rinse the lenses with a contact lens solution to remove any remaining residue.

Disinfecting

After cleaning, it is vital to disinfect your contact lenses to kill any harmful microorganisms present. There are several disinfecting solutions, such as hydrogen peroxide, multipurpose, and peroxide-based solutions.

Hydrogen peroxide solutions are effective at killing microorganisms. However, they can be hard to work with as they require a neutralizing tablet and a separate case. Multipurpose solutions are more user-friendly, as they can help clean, disinfect, and store your lenses. Peroxide-based solutions are also effective but require a separate case.

Storage

Proper storage of your contact lenses is essential to ensure they remain safe and comfortable. After cleaning and disinfecting your lenses, store them in a clean contact lens case with a solution.

Avoid leaving your lenses in the case for longer than your manufacturer's recommendation, as this can cause the lenses to dry and become uncomfortable to wear. Always replace the contact lens case every three months to prevent the buildup of harmful microorganisms.

Handling and Inserting

Handle and insert your contact lenses correctly to avoid damaging them and ensure they are comfortable to wear. First, clean your hands with soap and water, then dry them thoroughly before handling your lenses.

To insert your contact lenses, place the lens on the tip of your index finger and use your other hand to pull down your lower eyelid. Then, look up and put the lens on the white part of your eye. When the lens is in the correct position, it will feel comfortable, and your vision will be clear.

Removal

Removing your contact lenses is a crucial step in caring for them. Start by washing your hands with soap and water and then dry them thoroughly. Next, look up and use your index finger to gently slide the lens down to the white part of your eye. Then, pinch the lens between your thumb and index finger and carefully remove it.

Contact Lenses Replacement

Contact lenses have a specific lifespan and should be replaced according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Soft contact lenses need replacing every two weeks, while gas-permeable lenses are replaced annually.

It is vital to replace your contact lenses on schedule to ensure they remain safe and comfortable. Wearing worn-out contact lenses can increase your risk of eye infections and other complications.
